Successful grant applications rarely begin when a fund opens.
Increasingly, funders are looking for organisations that can demonstrate a clear need, a defined project, a credible budget and measurable impact.
And their own guidance tells us this.
Community Foundation Ireland recommends having organisational, governance and financial information up to date well ahead of grant deadlines, with assessment criteria considering areas such as need, impact, budget, governance and fit.
Rethink Ireland, which reports reviewing 1,601 funding applications and funding more than 131 successful applicants, asks organisations to clearly explain the problem being addressed, who will benefit and how the effectiveness of the project will be evaluated.
So, before the next grant opens, ask:
Can we evidence the need?
Do we have a clearly defined and costed project?
Can we explain what will change?
Can we demonstrate whether it worked?
The strongest grant preparation happens before the deadline — identifying the right projects, developing realistic budgets and having the evidence and outcomes ready.
So, one question worth asking your team this month:
If the perfect funding opportunity opened tomorrow, would you be ready to make the case?
