Since 1961, Samaritans has been there for anyone across Ireland who is struggling to cope, doing amazing work in suicide prevention.
Volunteers are at the heart of Samaritans Ireland. Last year, more than 1,500 volunteers in Ireland answered around 345,000 calls, which is almost 1,000 a day and more than 70,000 hours of emotional support. Across the border, over 600 volunteers in Northern Ireland answered a further 110,000 calls.
Volunteers don’t give advice or tell people what to do. They listen. For many callers, that call is their only support, and it can be the moment someone feels less alone with what they’re carrying.
Their work also goes beyond the phone. Samaritans volunteers support people at summer festivals, reaching 1,200 people last year, and train prisoners as Listeners, who offer face-to-face support to fellow inmates.
None of this happens without people giving their time.
Volunteers come from all walks of life. They receive full training and ongoing support, and they take shifts around their own lives, including the overnight shifts that keep the line open 24/7, 365 days a year.
How you can help:
Volunteer: find your nearest branch and learn about training.
Donate or fundraise: every euro helps keep the phones answered.
Share the number: you never know who might need it.
If you or someone you know is struggling, you don’t have to face it alone. Call Samaritans free, day or night, on 116 123.
