There’s a natural instinct in the charity sector to aim for reach to speak to as many people as possible. But when a message is designed for everyone, it rarely resonates with anyone.

At best, it informs. At worst, it’s ignored.

As Seth Godin puts it:

“Everyone is not your customer.”

The same applies here.

The organisations that cut through aren’t louder, they’re clearer. They know exactly who they’re trying to reach, what that audience cares about and what will prompt action. That clarity shapes everything from messaging to strategy.

For leadership teams, this isn’t just a communications issue, it’s a strategic one. Prioritising a specific audience forces sharper decisions about where to focus time, energy and resources.

There’s often a concern that narrowing your audience limits reach. In reality, the opposite is true. A message that resonates deeply with a defined group is far more likely to be remembered, shared and acted on.

Or as David Ogilvy famously said:

“Don’t bunt. Aim out of the ballpark.”

The shift is simple, but not easy:
Move from trying to reach more people – to reaching the right people, with clarity.

Because in a crowded landscape, clarity is what drives impact.
